Since this is my first experience with having rats, I’m kinda figuring things out as I go along. I heard from a friend that baby rats should be given a decent amount of protein, and that I should consider feeding my rats meat ends. Being a vegetarian, I was not too keen on this idea, so instead I went crazy on feeding them things like yogurt and hummus. However, the result was that their pee started to stink really bad, and with their cage in my room it was especially unpleasant.
See, my second and third story floors of the cage are mesh wire, so to make it more comfortable for the rats I put lizard carpeting. The carpets got SO smelly I had to throw them out, even washing them wasn’t getting rid of the smell. Since I didn’t have another solution for covering the wire mesh, I bought more carpet. But I’ve been putting stuff in their water that supposedly makes their urine smell better, and I’ve been feeding them less protein. Luckily, this all seems to be working, but their pee is not %100 back to normal yet.
The one thing that concerned me when getting my rats was that they would stink up my room, and up until now they had barely any odor at all. Now that I’m on summer break I might bring them to the vet just to make sure I’m doing everything right, cause now I’m afraid I’m not feeding them ENOUGH protein, arghh!
Anyways, that is my smelly rat rant.
